Tennis Footwork Drill: Forehand and Backhand Recovery

Our Sweatband Coach, Callum Lloyd, takes us through a handy tennis drill, focusing on footwork and recovery. Callum is a Senior Performance Coach at the LTA.

This drill is about optimum positioning on the account, allowing for you to make the most of your forehand and backhand stroke. This is a simple drill that can be done in a small space at home or at a court, using two markers on the ground for a reference point.

There are two key thins to remember when positioning for a forehand or backhand recovery shot.

  1. Be explosive when you move out to court – so these means big steps
  2. Match this with your recovery step – be explosive when you cross over to recover

Repeat the movement for around 30 seconds before resting for 30 seconds. Do the drill 5 times and then move onto your backhand stroke. This drill should take around 10 minutes.
